DMT — Research Content
Description
DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound in the tryptamine class. It is known for producing intense, short-lived hallucinogenic experiences. Historically, it has been used in ceremonial brews such as Ayahuasca by indigenous peoples of South America for spiritual and introspective purposes.
Mechanism & Effects
DMT primarily acts as a serotonergic agonist at 5-HT2A receptors, leading to vivid sensory distortions, altered perception of time, and profound, often mystical experiences. Typical effects include visual and auditory hallucinations, euphoria, and altered cognition. When smoked or vaporized, experiences usually last 15–45 minutes, while oral ingestion (with MAO inhibitors) can extend effects to several hours.
